Publication: Very weak bonds to artificial atoms formed by quantum corrals

First measurement of chemical bonding to artificial atoms

Scientists at RUN have measured the chemical bonding to artificial atoms for the first time.

With their technique it is also possible to deterministically manipulate the internal structure of these artificial atoms, e.g. by introducing additional atoms as defects. Subsequently, changes to the outer shell of the artificial atom can be probed.

Apart from fascinating new insigths into the wonders of quantum mechanics, these artificial atoms could also be applied in quantum computers as qubits.

The results have been published in Science.
